Career Advice from a Top Woman in PR
By Emily Mong
SHIFT Communications - January 25, 2017
SHIFT Managing Partner, Amy Lyons, has been honored as a Top Woman in PR by PR News. Amy has kindly offered to share some career advice for anyone looking to grow as PR leader. I’d remind myself to play the long game. Be open to new areas to test skills, show value and most importantly, learn in service of the company I’m with. Rather than focusing on just what’s in it for me in the short term, keep a real focus on grounding my desire for growth in those areas that also benefit the company.
Millenials in PR Think They Are Doing A Great Job (Their Managers Disagree)
By Author: Riley Joachims
PR Couture - January 24, 2017
A new study by The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations reveals a perception gap between millenials and their managers. Overall, the study enforces the idea that perception is everything. Both millenials and managers will be well served by reviewing the findings and ideally, setting aside some time to any points that appear to be directly impacting the employee-manager relationship. In particular, the study found that millennials believe they take their jobs seriously while their managers are overwhelmingly skeptical.
How PR pros can combat the fake news epidemic
By Wendy Bulawa Agudelo
Axia Public Relations - January 25, 2017
As a PR professional, you can help your clients combat fake news. Here’s how. Be transparent, accurate and forthcoming when communicating client news. Consistently monitor client brands and businesses. Quickly respond to misinformation. If you learn that your clients or brands are under fake news attack, it’s no longer solely important to get those false stories removed, it is equally important to focus on the facts.
The PR of Best of the Best Dog Show
By Aaron Sarno
Everything PR - January 24, 2017
The annual Westminster Kennel Club shows happen the second week in February – beginning on February 11 (Saturday) and continuing on through February 13-14. This will be the first year that the show can be streamed through various devices and apps. Another first is streaming backstage coverage with those getting ready to perform, and with the winners. PR for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show isn’t just about finding the announcers, experts, judges, and such. It’s also about lining up vendors for the event, including the American Kennel Club, selling its branded merchandise and offering pedigree chart printing. Many others with dog-related businesses or organizations will have booths at arguably the best-known dog show in the world.
Davos Highlights AI's Massive PR Problem
By Jason Bloomberg
Forbes - January 22, 2017
Aside from the occasional assembly line worker getting too close to the machinery, killer robots aren’t in the cards for AI in the near term. However, the economic impact that dramatically improved automation might bring is a very real concern, especially given populist pushback. It’s high time to change the PR surrounding AI from killer robots to digital transformation. “Companies must adapt their business models to driver new areas of revenue and growth,” explains Adam Elster, President of Global Field Operations at CA Technologies. “With digital transformation, the biggest factor is time: how fast can companies transform and bring new products to market.”
5 ways PR pros can tell startups’ stories
By Craig Corbett
PR Daily - January 25, 2017
Catch journalists’ eyes and grab media coverage with an interesting tale, instead pitching a list of product features that is likely compel them to hit ‘delete.’ When reaching out to journalists or publicizing your product or service, it is important to stick to the facts. Journalists want to pick up stories which are engaging, trending and (most importantly) interesting. If you are an SAAS provider or are launching a new app—unless it allows you to move back in time or change your gender at the click of a button—then your product is not any of these things to anyone apart from you and your development team. To improve your chances of standing out from the crowd, you must match a great product with an eye-grabbing narrative.

If you dream of becoming a speaker, author, broadcaster or other brand of professional communicator, King advises to get in as soon as you can. 5. Stay curious. To be a skilled communicator, you must stay curious, King says. 9. Never give up.

PR Agency Account Management: From Adequate to Astonishing
By Kevin Foley - CEO, KEF Media
Bulldog Reporter - January 25, 2017
Here are some ways to get from adequate to astonishing: Tell the client something he or she doesn’t know about his organization or industry. Challenge every account team member to astonish you—and not in a bad way! When brainstorming, don’t let yourself get hemmed in by arbitrary “project parameters.” Determine what causes your client the most pain and figure out how you help relieve it. Be your team’s toughest critic—is that the best (creative, writing, video, etc.) we can do for our client?

The automation rebellion is coming
By Arik Hanson
Communications Conversations by Arik Hanson - January 25, 2017
Everyone’s talking about chatbots and automation–but I tend to think we may see customers giving brands a serious stiff arm when it comes to automating communications in the year ahead. Think about it. What’s one of the primary complaints we hear from consumers when it comes to brands and customer service and experience? “I want to talk to a real person!” Consumers are tired of phone trees. They’re sick of giving phones voice commands instead of talking to actual people.
