How Your Company Should Plan for a Fake News Attack
By Kristina Libby
PR News - January 31, 2017
Brands must have a plan in place to combat a fake news attack. This plan should be, at least, four-fold encompassing digital media, PR, influencer marketing and social media—employees in each discipline should be ready to engage at a moment’s notice. The faster a brand can combat the fake news, the better the results will be for mitigating its impact.
6 Principles of Crisis Communications From CDC (Plus Resource Materials)
By Ian James Wright
PR News - January 30, 2017
It's not easy to develop crisis plans, but with a set of underlying principles, your plans may flow out of that foundation in a very natural way. Research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defined a new field of communication—Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication (CERC)—that combines crisis communication and risk communication for use during emergencies. CERC has been used in public health responses since 2001 to provide information that helps people make sound decisions to protect themselves and their families under narrow time constraints and with insufficient information.

Special Needs PR: When Publicity Is Heartwarming
By Aaron Sarno
Everything PR - January 31, 2017
Here’s the interesting truth in the PR business: special needs and disability campaigns and stories are often award winners. If an agency wants to do some pro bono work, charitable organizations that work with those with specific or special needs are a good bet. It’s a great way to hone skills, do some good, and possibly scare up an award. And those benefits don’t begin to cover the heartwarming memories that can be created, or the readjustment of life priorities.
Larry King's 9 lessons for becoming a master communicator
By Kelsey Humphreys
PR Daily - January 31, 2017
How has the television and radio icon reached such a high level of success? By following these nine rules that any communicator can—and should—implement. 1. Just get started. If you dream of becoming a speaker, author, broadcaster or other brand of professional communicator, King advises to get in as soon as you can. 5. Stay curious. To be a skilled communicator, you must stay curious, King says. 9. Never give up. King went on to assure aspiring communicators that, even though it's a competitive industry, if they have the skills and the commitment to stick with it for the long haul, they will make it.
3 measurement myths that PR pros should see right through
PR Daily - January 31, 2017
Vanity metrics and padded numbers, though, do nothing to help you in the long run. Are you falling prey to these common misconceptions about PR measurement? 1. Myth: It’s all about impressions. Truth: Stakeholders want to see exactly how your programs are helping the bottom line. 2. Myth: Measurement is just about the numbers. 3. Myth: You’re a PR pro, not a data scientist. Truth: In today’s business world, you have to be both.

What Startups Should Do Differently When It Comes to PR
By Ivy Cohen
Entrepreneur - January 30, 2017
Startups must specifically address the unique needs and challenges of being a new company while creating their PR strategy. Startups can learn invaluable lessons by observing the PR strategies of established companies, but prior to creating their own PR plans, entrepreneurs should consider both the challenges and benefits that are inherent in any startup. Instead of seeking to simply emulate what older companies are doing, see what works best and tweak it to suit your company’s unique situation. That’s how you’ll have the most impact.
How to Empower Your Small Business PR with Thought Leadership
By Wendy Marx, President of Marx Communications
Business 2 Community - January 29, 2017
In small business PR, it’s easy to suffer from product or service egomania. Thought leadership is about the customer’s needs, not your product or service. Creation of authentic, helpful content should be a priority. Organize a team dedicated to boosting thought leadership. Use bylines, industry panels, and book publishing to fuel your thought leadership. It isn’t always easy to pursue thought leadership in small business PR, but the rewards are worth it. Keep your B2B public relations focused on this goal, and watch your B2B leads grow.
The worst advice heard about Public Relations
By Darren Gilbert
Media Update - January 31, 2017
Three PR professionals share their own experiences and the worst advice they’ve heard (or have been given).‘Let’s not respond to that, maybe it’ll go away’ is one example. Another is this: ‘Social Media is a fad so don’t bother with it.’ Unfortunately, these aren’t the only ridiculous comments out there. “Are you a ‘people person’? Then you should get a job in PR.” Every industry has its share of clichés. For the PR industry, one is that people who enter it need to be extroverts. You may hear that the best PR’S are ‘socialable, bubbly and chatty’.
