Ethical PR: How Much Leg Should the Headline Show?
By Kent Campbell
Business 2 Community - March 6, 2017
The public relations industry, and the agents who work in it, have sometimes garnered a reputation for ruthless promotion, and are often vilified for their practices. But when it’s your job to bring publicity to a person, group, brand, or idea, how do you know what’s out of line, and how do you ensure your ethics remain intact?
Mind The Gap: Where User Experiences Go To Die
By Jackson Murphy
Forbes - March 6, 2017
If an experience starts digitally, users don't want it to break down and require human assistance from the brand. The companies that will win in this environment will make digitally relevant customer journeys as an integral part of your business and product experience. These key flows are starting to trump the various destinations we build along the way.
Have PRs been too slow to adopt SEO?
By Christian Sharp
Influence Magazine - Chartered Institute of Public Relations - March 6, 2017
I was disheartened to read an article implying that the PR industry is not focusing on SEO, based on pretty cast-iron statistics from the PRCA. I consider myself fortunate that the last two agencies I’ve worked at have placed SEO high up the list of skills that PRs should know about.
JetSmarter tries to extort journalists for positive coverage
By T.C. Sottek
The Verge - March 3, 2017
We’ve seen plenty of aggressive requests from companies that want positive coverage, but perhaps none as absurd as what we just got from JetSmarter — a startup that’s been called the “Uber for private jets.” In exchange for a demonstration of the service (a round-trip flight in the US), JetSmarter sent us an agreement that demands an uncritical puff piece. The rub? JetSmarter wanted the credit card number of a Verge reporter, so that it could charge them $2,000 if they didn’t publish a positive story “within 5 business days.”
PR Measurement: How to Track Inbound Traffic from a Press Release
By Serena Ehrlich, Director of Social and Evolving Media, Business Wire
BusinessWire - March 6, 2017
Provided by your analytics program, URL builders or UTM links are lines of text you add to the end of a URL that allow the program to track the inbound traffic activity you are generating. URL builders allow you to connect the dots between your reader and your website, tracking the impact of your communications program directly on your business goals.
How PR Can Fight #FakeNews and Why It Should
By Katie Creaser - SVP at Affect
PR News - March 6, 2017
If our job is to ethically persuade public opinion by working with credible media, it follows that it’s vital that the public’s trust in a free press not be eroded. To go a step further, if the practice of PR is going to survive, good journalism must thrive. For that reason, it is critical that PR pros be more accountable than ever for their work.
Three Steps PR Pros Should Take After a Presidential Transition
By Charlene Blohm - President and CEO, C. Blohm & Associates
Bulldog Reporter - March 6, 2017
Even if your organization is not politically active, decisions made in Washington, D.C., will impact your firm and most importantly, your customers and their audiences. Under the new Republican administration, agendas will change and your industry will need to adapt. It’s critical to be well-informed and have a plan to set into motion for working with the new administration and its leadership. Consider these three initiatives as a start.
Ethics Study Identifies Need for Training & Mentors in the Workplace
By Marlene Neill and Nancy Weaver
Institute for Public Relations - March 6, 2017
A new study sponsored by the Arthur W. Page Center and PRSA Board of Ethics & Professional Standards (BEPS) found that Millennial public relations practitioners do not feel prepared to offer ethics counsel and are unlikely to speak up when faced with ethical dilemmas. However, those who received ethics training through their employers or through PRSA and who had mentors were more likely to raise their concerns.
Crisis comms, definition and best practice – thoughts on a #CommsChat
By Ella Minty
Influence Magazine - Chartered Institute of Public Relations - March 6, 2017
Recently, @CommsChat moderated a very interesting Twitter chat on Crisis Communication. The questions they asked were rather interesting and, I could argue, not quite typical for such a topic.
