Why PR pros must align earned and paid media during crises
Zach Schapira
PR Daily - October 17, 2016
During a crisis, PR becomes a focal point, and an earned media strategy helps in influencing journalists. However, if the paid media strategy is not adjusted to work during a crisis, your organization or client could make a major gaffe to further tarnish the brand’s reputation. Earned media is often considered the first line of defense during a crisis, but paid media alignment is imperative in order to ensure that every interaction a customer or potential customer has with your brand is on-message. The process of sharing knowledge among PR and marketing teams should start before a crisis ever arises, and check-ins should be scheduled both regularly and to prepare for new campaign deployment or messaging overhaul. The effect of PR pros working with paid media teams is both known and measurable: Once incorporated into a firm’s standard operating procedure, the likelihood of subsequent brand damage is reduced dramatically.

I Trust You, I Trust You Not: Different Sides of Organization-Public Relationships
Hongmei Shen
Institute for Public Relations - October 17, 2016
In this blog post, I introduce an additional side of OPR quality—distrust, and how it differs from trust. Distrust is often considered as simply the opposite of trust by organizational researchers and excluded as a component of OPR quality in the public relations literature. Distrust added another layer to our understanding of relational parties’ perceptions of their state of interdependence, i.e., OPR quality. Taking into account both trust and distrust allows relationship managers to better understand their publics’ perceptions of their relationships. Most importantly, the fuller knowledge of relationship management adds to the expertise of relationship managers, enabling them to play a bigger role in making strategic organizational decisions.

Why We Love Competitive Benchmarking (And You Should, Too!)
TrendKite - October 17, 2016
Benchmarking your competitor’s PR performance is a great way to get to know their strengths and weaknesses and gauge your own relative success. If you haven’t done competitive PR benchmarking before or if you are entering a new market, developing a baseline for the competition is the first step. If you listen intently (and with the right technology) your competitors will help you craft your strategy whether they want to or not.

How to Make Charitable Partners Part of Your PR Strategy
Lindsey Smolan, Principal at Lindsey Smolan Public Relations
PR Couture - October 17, 2016
Securing charity partnerships for brands opens up fosters goodwill and has the added benefit of providing a unique story angle that can lead media outreach. When evaluating different charitable opportunities, make sure there is an obvious connection between the brand and the non-profit.
Make sure that the charity you are working with is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and actually gives back to where it says it does. Encourage your client to agree to something a bit more creative than the standard 10% of proceeds will be donated (this will go further toward media coverage as well).
Master Modern PR By Integrating the PESO Model
Gini Dietrich, founder and CEO, Arment Dietrich
SpinSucks - October 18, 2016
Marketing budgets are increasingly shifting to focus on content marketing and other efforts that can show a concrete return-on-investment. The PESO model takes the four media types—paid, earned, shared and owned—and merges them together. This takes PR out of the nice-to-have marketing category that’s first on the budget chopping block, into an integral part of your business growth strategy.
PR is More Than Just Media Relations
Meredith L. Eaton
Business 2 Community - October 17, 2016
As great as they are, though, media hits are just single tactic in pursuit of a much larger business strategy. Successful public relations initiatives all start with a conversation about goals. Specific tactics, like media relations and many others, may then be used in support of those goals.
AMA: How to use Reddit for PR
Nick Singeruy
Landis Communications INC. - October 17, 2016
AMA, which stands for “Ask Me Anything”, is a term used to describe interviewing people on Reddit. Reddit users tend to ask questions that are more particular and relate to Reddit culture as a whole, rather than the actual thing the person is there to promote. This gives the person being questioned an opportunity to reveal who they are as people rather than the job that may define them. Just to understand subreddits and how to navigate the whole spectrum takes a solid month or two. All in all, I would say it’s worth the time to understand this website, if not for AMA’s and its PR capabilities, at least for your own personal hobbies and interests.
