How To Use Social Media To Get Ahead in Your Career
By Lauren Alexis Fisher
Harper's Bazaar - October 18, 2016
Tweeting landed me my first fashion internship in New York and connected me with the woman who does social media best: former DKNY PR Girl, Aliza Licht. While my Twitter-inspired move to New York may have been a risk, it's Licht who redefined not only her own career, but also the role of PR and social media managers as a whole. I sat down with Licht to talk about how to use social media to your career advantage, the do's and don'ts of online networking, and even the oft confusing unknown that is LinkedIn.
Lyft has hired two new key executives as it continues to lag behind Uber
By Johana Bhuyian
Recode - October 20, 2016
First the hires: Raj Kapoor of venture capital firm Mayfield Fund, which led Lyft’s series A round, is joining as the chief strategy officer; and Melissa Waters, the former vice president of brand and product marketing at Pandora, will become head of marketing. Also leaving is Vice President of Communications Brandon McCormick. McCormick, who came to Lyft from Facebook where he was director of global communications, will be taking “personal time,” according to the company. Lyft said Sheila Bryson will be taking over as interim head of communications. “We thank both Kira and Brandon for their contributions to Lyft,” the company said in a statement.
Omnicom set to take full ownership of London agency Portland
By John Harrington
PR Week - October 21, 2016
Portland’s most recent accounts reveal that Omnicom has exercised its right to buy the remaining 19 per cent, with the price dependent on profits achieved between 2017 and 2019. The transaction is thought to be unlikely to have a major impact on Portland’s day-to-day operations. Unlike its PR stablemates Ketchum, FleishmanHillard Fishburn and Porter Novelli, Portland’s London office is not located in Omnicom’s London HQ at Bankside.
Horizon Organic starts fresh with Golin as PR AOR
By Diana Bradley
PR Week - October 20, 2016
The company selected Golin earlier this month, after the brand, owned by WhiteWave Foods, reached out to a few agencies. Alicia Alfano, the firm’s executive director and consumer marketing group co-lead, is leading account work. Planning for 2017 will begin in the coming weeks, said Matthew Hargarten, director of communications at WhiteWave Foods. "We have charged Golin with coming up with a PR plan to seize on cultural moments throughout the year to bring the Horizon brand into those relevant conversations," said Hargarten. "Media is a big part of that, but also social and content will be at play as well with bringing Horizon into that conversation. Always-on social monitoring and listening, and seeding of the product will also be a part of what they do." Hargarten defined "cultural moments" as events or situations throughout the year where consumers are focused on a particular topic, such as the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, or back-to-school.
Can Machines Replace PR People? Maybe.
By Jack O'Dwyer
O'Dwyer's - October 21, 2016
Automation in PR, with computers dealing with reporters instead of PR people, was one of the topics at Communications Week, New York, which ends today. Comms Week founder Tiffany Guarnaccia of Kite Hill PR, in a report on the panel, said there is little worry about job loss at the moment but “we are starting to see examples of artificial intelligence in our space with bots [web robots] writing AP stories and branded content.” Callers to service companies are sometimes confronted with up to ten recorded options of topics they might be interested in. Reporters calling with questions might get hit with the same drill. Merrill Brown. Director, Montclair State University’s School of Communications and Media, said there are areas of PR where bots could easily be deployed today. “To the extent that bots could take over straightforward PR duties such as corporate earnings releases, this technology is a plus. There are a lot of categories within the service industries where this tech can free up the resources to focus on more creative work.”
Joele Frank Maintains Deal PR Lead Through Q3
O'Dwyer's - October 21, 2016
Joele Frank, Wilkinson Brimmer Katcher kept pace atop M&A PR advisors in the US through the third quarter, advising 79 transactions so far this year, according to The Deal.
‘Huge gender gaps’ in wages persist in health care comms
By Susan Young
PR Daily - October 21, 2016
Proactive storytelling and paid digital media are driving health care communications. The 2016 Career and Salary Survey—commissioned by Medical Marketing and Media—says HR executives in pharma, device and health care have painted a picture of an “an industry that can't hire qualified people fast enough.” Despite the fact that they still offer the highest average salaries, an almost equal number of health care marketers at manufacturers indicate they'll be looking for a new job in the coming year as those say they won't be. Regulations, manufacturing and mergers and acquisitions aren’t the sexiest topics to attract entry-level PR and marketing staffers.
30 jobs in the PR and marketing world
By Claire Lane
Ragan - October 21, 2016
Similar to how you’d negotiate with a prospective client before signing a statement of work, many PR pros are using their skills to negotiate job perks. Negotiation tactics are immensely valuable—especially in today’s competitive work climate. Via Time.com, “Earn What You’re Worth” author, Nicole Williams says it’s up to you to ask for what you want. If the job offer is on the table, but you’re not sure which perks to ask for, consider the following.
How PR Pros Can Anticipate Crises at Their Own Organization
By Seth Arenstein
PR News - October 20, 2016
The five minutes that Warren Buffett once said it takes to ruin a reputation is no longer the case. It’s now been reduced to the time it takes someone to create a Facebook post, Verizon’s VP, corporate communications Torod Neptune said at PR News’ Crisis Management Workshop Oct. 19 in New York. Listening and the Ivory Tower: Another important function for communicators, the two agree, should be monitoring the social conversation, via Google Analytics and other tools, so they should be most attuned to the climate and “anticipate crises,” Neptune said. All Is Not Lost: That’s because communicators “work in the shadows,” between a brand's various departments and so are well placed to know where potential crises loom, Micheline Tang, director of communications at the law firm King & Spalding, said at the workshop. Tang suggests formulating such lists and updating them through periodic visits your brand’s domestic and international offices.
9 Great Ideas from Award-Winning Communicators
By Diane Schwartz
PR News - October 21, 2016
Bring back creativity: This requires opening yourself up to diverse points of view and coloring outside the lines to tell a memorable story. Collaborate and break down silos: internal politics and resistance to ideas from cross-department peers is the path to stagnation. When producing branded content, it’s about your reader not you. The more transparent you are (as a brand, as a person), the more successful you will be. Spotting trends early and often will position your organization, your department and you for leadership. Embrace face to face: nothing is more valuable than eye-to-eye contact, getting out of the office/your comfort zone when interacting with stakeholders. Empower others to tell your story: third party validation from customers trumps all. Personalize your pitches: but be sure you know whom you’re pitching to. That email I just received addressed to Gerald re Viagara was memorable – but in a bad way.
6 Steps to Winning a Paid Social Budget From C-Suite Skeptics
By Sophie Maerowitz
PR News - October 20, 2016
On Oct. 20 at PR News' Social Media Conference in New York, Allen Plummer, content marketing and social media strategist at Vanguard, discussed a number of steps toward making the case for a paid social media budget. Look for allies and supporters within your organization. Your organization's leadership might be resistant to hiring additional social media staff, but are there other employees who are interested in social? Can you craft a team of volunteers to help with content? Writers may want to learn how to write for social media. Designers may want to create images for Twitter. If you just ask, you might be surprised.
Stars of PR PROfiles: Brooke Hovey, Cohn & Wolfe
Bulldog Reporter - October 21, 2016
Executive Vice President, Global Strategy & Development. Brooke Hovey won Gold in 2014 for Digital Communications Professional of the Year. Most misunderstood thing about PR: "It’s more than media relations and “publicity.” Old school PR has evolved into strategic, integrated communications—but still with an emphasis on “earned” media." Most interesting thing about your job: "The diversity of the work. In any given day, I may meet with super smart people to discuss tater tots, vision health, infant car seats and natural gas. I’m constantly learning, and I love that."

Behind the Headlines With Steve Majors
By Maria Materise
Cision - October 20, 2016
Steve Majors, vice president, communications at Communities in Schools, says in order to find opportunities and tell your brand’s story effectively, you need to make good connections. "Whether you are working as a journalist or working as a public relations professional, the quality of your relationships makes all the difference. Recognize that media relations is an art and a science. I think too often as practitioners we rely on one of those skills over the others. Either we are great writers or story pitchers or we excel in maximizing the distribution of stories and measuring their impact."
Trust: A Communicator’s Lifeline
By James Rubec

Cision found more than 3,000 comments on social in reference to trust and last year’s PRSA International Conference. The lessons from these posts and the discussion each generated are threefold. Timeliness and executive voices drive believability and positive perception. Relationships are powerful. Deliver on your promises.
The Costly Mistake PR Agencies Make on Instagram
By Crosby Noricks
PR Couture - October 20, 2016
As PR agencies aim to take on more social media work, it’s a huge red flag to see them neglect a hugely important part of the puzzle; their own channels. We work with people we like, so don’t be afraid to pepper in the personal interests and passions of your team into your feed. With tools like Canva, you no longer need a graphic design degree to create a branded, consistent look. Cut costs on expensive printed brochures, postcards and proposal print-outs and invest in your own stock photography that you can use across your online presence.
