PR Week - January 24, 2022
Propel is back with its quarterly Media Barometer report, providing insight into pitches and how PR pros can optimize their media relations strategies. From an analysis of 1.4 million pitches, the study again found evidence to debunk the myth that Fridays are the worst day to pitch journalists. In fact, the report found that the average journalist’s open rate relative to pitch volume was the highest on the last workday of the week. Overall, the report found a decline in journalist open and response rates last year. The average open rate dropped from 38.81% in 2020 to 28.45% in 2021, and the average response rate dropped 32.25% year-on-year, from 5.21% to 3.53%.

Left to run rampant, any of these can quickly turn into toxic chaos that hampers an organization's ability to thrive. If any of these symptoms ring a bell, that's a good indication that you need to start thinking about your communication strategy and how you communicate inside your organization. Don't shy away from the things you see are causing chaos; burying your head in the sand won't help anyone.

Spin Sucks - January 24, 2022
If you recognize the incident falls into the category of being a problem, yet you still find yourself being persuaded by other directors to deal with it as a communication risk, it is worth investigating who exactly this is an issue for. You will often find it could simply be one of the management team or a department head who feels strongly about a particular issue. Should this be the case, you can be confident your company is not facing a communication crisis, although you should seek an approach that will ease the tension and provide a solution.
